School District Hosts Day of Reflection Breakfast

Over 600 community partners, members, and supporters of the St. Bernard Parish Public Schools recently attended the 6th Annual Day of Reflection Breakfast hosted by the School Board and Chalmette High School. The event, held at the 9th Grade Academy gym, featured special presentations by Chalmette High students, US Senator Mary Landrieu, FEMA Region VI Coordinator Tony Russell, and Superintendent of Schools Doris Voitier.

The theme of this year’s breakfast centered on the growth of St. Bernard in the past 6 years, with each guest receiving a violet, the flower symbolizing “taking a chance on happiness.” Student hosts Sophie Boudreaux and Jesus Perez took their guests through an array of videos, student musical performances, and a rousing St. Bernard rendition of “Growin’ on the River” based on the popular hit Proud Mary.

This is the 6th year the school district has sponsored the breakfast which began at the 1st anniversary of Katrina’s devastation of the community. The community event is sponsored each August 29th by the School Board, but the program consists of student-led productions featuring all of the performing groups at Chalmette High School.

“It is important for our students to have this opportunity to give back to the community and, at the same time, remind the adults that they, the students, are the future of St. Bernard. That is why we are happy to give them this leadership and performance opportunity, and they have risen to the challenge each year,” said Superintendent of Schools Doris Voitier.
